Styling with attitude, embellishments, flourishes, whatever you call it, we love it!
Many square dancers will agree that embellishing many of the square dance calls is part of the fun of square dancing. Given the national presence of square dancing, it’s only reasonable to expect regional differences in the type and kinds of embellishments one sees.
Our goal here is to share different types of embellishments we have grown to love, and to encourage others to share with us what kind of embellishment they like to do!
We do caution you, there is a "dark side" to embellishments! In some areas “by the book” dancing is preferred, and embellishments may be frowned upon. All we know is once you get with a square who does them, it’s addicting and loads of fun! We suggest being flexible and only use embellishments with others of like mind.
NexGen-SD Dancers Karen Dilly and Bruce Kleinhans lead a “Styling” session at the 2014 IL State Square Dance Convention
Here, NexGen-SD Dances demonstrate doing a "Do si do" in the center while the other two other couples promenade around the outside. Doing a "Do si do" like this results in almost perfect timing of all four couples preventing the inside couples from backing up and hitting the promenading couples.
Here, Karen & Bruce work with the group on dong a “Ladies chain” where the ladies twirl in as they chain across. When all four ladies chain it results in a beautiful movement.
And yes, even NexGen-SD Dances make mistakes! Here everyone has a good laugh after completely blowing a call!
